Researching Pumpkins

We did a lot of estimating and measuring yesterday and today. We are having fun and learning with pumpkins!

We used a measuring tape to measure how tall the small pumpkin was first.

Then the large

Then we measured the distance around the pumpkins

Then we measured the weight with a scale.

We were making pretty outlandish estimates for the weight of the large pumpkin so we needed a point of reference. So I picked up the small pumpkin with one hand. I picked up the large pumpkin with two hands and balanced it and showed them that I could still hold it with one hand. Then we weighed our fried who weighs about 61 pounds and we all agreed that it took both my hands to lift him. So we agreed that guessing the large pumpkin weighed 80 pounds was not reasonable and we revised our estimates.

 It was heavy though!

The large pumpkin only weighed 20 pounds! 

Then we counted the lines on the outside of the pumpkin. I forgot to take a picture of the large pumpkin after we counted the lines but will tomorrow....

Tonight's homework: why did the small pumpkin weigh 5 pounds and the large pumpkin weigh 20 pounds--- a difference of 15 pounds?

But the small pumpkin had 18 lines and the large pumpkin had 22, only a difference of 4 lines. And wht is the connection? We guessed the difference between the number of lines would be much more, why wasn't it?
