I read about this app at Mrs. T's First. Grade and had to check it out. You can have up to four players and as soon as they recognize the object and read the word on their tray, they click the word. Great practice reading words! I can see this getting very competitive! This could be used in many ways but I plan to incorporate it into word work during Daily 5. I can't wait to show the kids! Unfortunately, today I am out sick so it will have to wait. In the meantime, I am looking for new Daily 5 ideas. I can do that laying down, right?

Video Games
He's just a disk, in a case, made out of plastic.
And he's my best friend.
He thinks about me playing him everyday,
In the morning, in the afternoon, and at night.
I get mad at him sometimes because he glitches sometimes but he does not care.
We just learned personification today using Cynthia Rylant's Scarecrow & C.T. mastered it! He is an amazing writer!!!!!!!

Here is our large pumpkin with 22 lines.
One student noticed that the lines all seemed to connect to the stem. Great observation!
Today we began by making predictions of how many seeds we thought were in the small and large pumpkin. Here is one student's data sheet with her predictions.

After we predicted, we cut the pumpkins open to see the seeds. Then we made estimates.
Cutting open our small pumpkin.
Things got a little messy!
This is my data sheet- I displayed it on the smart board as we conducted our research. My predictions were much less reasonable than some of my students. Great work guys!!!
Researching Pumpkins

We did a lot of estimating and measuring yesterday and today. We are having fun and learning with pumpkins!
We used a measuring tape to measure how tall the small pumpkin was first.
Then the large
Then we measured the distance around the pumpkins
Then we measured the weight with a scale.
We were making pretty outlandish estimates for the weight of the large pumpkin so we needed a point of reference. So I picked up the small pumpkin with one hand. I picked up the large pumpkin with two hands and balanced it and showed them that I could still hold it with one hand. Then we weighed our fried who weighs about 61 pounds and we all agreed that it took both my hands to lift him. So we agreed that guessing the large pumpkin weighed 80 pounds was not reasonable and we revised our estimates.
The large pumpkin only weighed 20 pounds! Then we counted the lines on the outside of the pumpkin. I forgot to take a picture of the large pumpkin after we counted the lines but will tomorrow....
Tonight's homework: why did the small pumpkin weigh 5 pounds and the large pumpkin weigh 20 pounds--- a difference of 15 pounds?
But the small pumpkin had 18 lines and the large pumpkin had 22, only a difference of 4 lines. And wht is the connection? We guessed the difference between the number of lines would be much more, why wasn't it?
AND.....WHAT'S THE CONNECTION OR IS THERE ONE?
Stay tuned for more data tomorrow!
